Notifications
Thermostat Unreachable
You will receive this notification if a thermostat has not communicated on the Pelican wireless network for 4 hours. This does not necessarily mean the thermostat is not functioning, as it can still operate independently if it has power. However, loss of communication will prevent virtual access and historical data logging.
Possible Causes:
No Power
The most common cause of lost communication is a power loss to the thermostat. Most thermostats receive power from a dedicated transformer inside their HVAC equipment. If the HVAC equipment has been powered down for maintenance or is experiencing an issue that results in a loss of power, the thermostat will also shut down.
Recommended Action:
First, verify that the thermostat has power. If it does, review the other possible causes outlined in this article.
Thermostat Icons:
Depending on which Pelican thermostat you have, indicator symbols on the thermostat’s screen might appear to help you identify the connectivity issues.
Out-Of-Range
Although this thermostat has previously been connected to your Pelican wireless network, it may be in a location with either poor/inconsistent wireless coverage or limited connection points to the network.
- Identifying Poor/Inconsistent Wireless Coverage:
Check the thermostat’s history graphs for frequent straight lines between data points. These generally indicate that the thermostat is only able to send periodic historical updates instead of providing continuous real-time data, suggesting weak or intermittent wireless connectivity. - Limited Wireless Connection Points:
If the thermostat relies on only one connection to the wireless mesh network, it is vulnerable to disconnection if that connection is lost. This could happen if the device it connects through is offline or if the thermostat itself has poor signal strength to the main wireless mesh.
Recommended Action:
Verify network connectivity, check for obstructions or interference to this thermostat or to other Pelican devices on you wireless network, and ensure the thermostat has power.
To address connectivity, strengthening the mesh network by adding additional wireless points might be necessary.
For further assistance, contact Pelican Technical Support.
Gateway Offline
If your Pelican Gateway is offline, all of your thermostats will be unreachable. To determine if this is the issue, check for a notification on your site that says “Gateway Unreachable.”
Recommended Action:
Look for gateway notifications and check if all thermostats are offline. If all thermostats are unreachable, this typically indicates that the Gateway is offline.
Repeater Offline
If multiple thermostats have become unreachable, it may be due to a Pelican Repeater losing connection. To check if this is the issue, review your Network Map and see if any repeaters are marked in red.
Recommended Action:
If a repeater is offline, verify that it has power. If it is not powered, plug it back in to restore connectivity.
Thermostat Loss Communication Configurations:
This notification will only trigger if the thermostat’s are configured as follows:
- Notification Sensitivity is set to High, enabling loss communication notifications after 4 hours.
- Notification Sensitivity is set to Custom and Notify if Unreachable enabled.
Each thermostat’s notification sensitivity is configured individually under its Thermostat Configuration settings.
